This book was recommended to me on Goodreads, based on my love of fairy tale adaptations. As a young adult, I was very fond of Patricia Wrede (especially her dragon series, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, and Cecilia and the Enchanted Chocolate Pot, which she co-wrote with Caroline Stevermer) and so I didn’t hesitate to pick this book up.

Unfortunately, the copy my library had was being mended, but there was an ebook version available to loan (does your library do this? I think it’s the most amazing program. I’m not a big tablet reader, but it opens up library services to a whole new demographic and it’s just so smart). I don’t have a picture of the cover for you for that reason, but I’m really glad I picked it up digitally because it was a fun, fairly light read, and, like so many young adult novels, had lots of appeals to older audiences.

I wasn’t familiar with the Grimm fairy tale this was based on, but that didn’t seem to matter as I was swept up into Elizabethan England (the dialect is preserved in the dialogue–be forewarned) and a place where magic was all around. A lively, quick read that I recommend if you’re a fan of fairy tale adaptation.
