This week’s topic is all about villains. I thought I would share 5 of my favorite villains from the movies with you. They’re not exactly the scariest or most menacing villains (no horror film here)–but they’re cold and calculating and play their parts extremely well.

I absolutely love Tim Curry. My fiancé thinks my obsession with him is a little weird–but I can’t help it. He’s simply amazing. And he’s wonderful as Cardinal Richelieu in The Three Musketeers.

Imelda Staunton‘s portrayal of Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a more chilling performance than Voldemort’s. She makes you want to rip her little head off. In other words, she’s perfection.

When they previewed scenes from The Wizard of Oz with test audiences, they decided to cut some of Margaret Hamilton’s scenes because she was just too scary for 1939 audiences. Her performance as the Wicked Witch of the West is definitely less scary now, but she has come to define how several generations see witches. And that laugh of hers is just amazing–thrilling every time you hear it.

Basil Rathbone delivers great performances of villains in many films (I mean with a name like Rathbone, it was pretty much his destiny) like The Adventures of Robin Hood, but his performance in The Court Jester is without a doubt my favorite. Not everyone could have made such a believable villain in a period piece next to Danny Kaye, but he totally pulls it off.

And finally, this list wouldn’t be complete without Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal of Captain Hook opposite Robin Williams in Hook. In any adaptation Captain Hook is one of my favorite villains, but in this one in particular he’s surprisingly interesting and human.
